There are many ways to make spaces more welcoming and supportive for people living with dementia. The good news is, these changes often benefit everyone – people who are newcomers to the community, or are neurodivergent(such as people on the autism spectrum) or anyone who finds busy or unfamiliar places overwhelming.

You don’t have to transform everything at once. Becoming dementia supportive is a process, and every improvement counts. Even small changes can reduce stress, build confidence, and help people feel more at ease.

To help you get started, we’ve grouped ideas into three levels based on the time, effort, and resources they require:

  • Level 1: Start Small – Everyday changes that are quick, affordable, and easy for individuals or small teams to try.
  • Level 2: Step Up – Actions that take a little more time, teamwork, or investment, but make a visible difference.
  • Level 3: Think Big – Larger projects that may require planning, funding, or coordination with renovations and community partners.

Every level matters. Each action you take helps create spaces that are easier to navigate, more comfortable, and truly welcoming for everyone.
