When we know someone personally, our perspective shifts. Dementia becomes part of a person’s story, not their entire identity. Connection, built over time, helps dissolve fear and misunderstanding, and replaces stereotypes and stigma with empathy and understanding: we protect what we love, and we love what we understand. Strong community ties also mean that when someone begins showing signs of dementia, the people around them notice sooner and can offer support early. This sense of ‘looking out for each other’ benefits everyone – it’s what makes a community truly dementia supportive.
